Earlier this year, recognizing the accelerating need for learning and applying artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs), Silverchair formed an AI Transformation Team, which I lead in partnership with our CTO and two senior developers.

As a team, we are researching AI technologies and LLM capabilities and we’ve begun developing prototypes for platform enhancements using AI (more to come on this). The creation of this team enabled us to explore AI's potential and outline our approach in more concrete, practical terms.

As a company, Silverchair is committed to incorporating AI across all roles and departments and have started to develop tools to support these efforts. One such instance is an internal tool (lovingly referred to as SilverChat), which is powered by ChaptGPT 4 without risking data leakage. SilverChat uses Silverchair’s sales, software, and content documentation to help new Silverchairians get up to speed more quickly and easily. The tool also supports existing Silverchairians in more quickly accessing the information they need, while referencing the source documentation for further reading.

Beyond the AI team, we're likewise transforming the rest of our organization to upskill for the AI future. Everyone needs to become proficient in AI tools and uses - proficiency with these tools will be a must for all roles, but particularly at Silverchair. Change management is of the utmost importance with seismic shifts like this, and we are encouraging collaborative efforts across the organization to accelerate the integration of AI. (Read more about our AI upskilling efforts in a recent blog post.)

We're also committed to working closely with clients to surface their specific requests and use cases for AI. Our Customer Success team is engaging with publishers via individual and small group workshops, and our product and AI teams are developing an AI platform roadmap.

Additionally, we’re leveraging our internal knowledge to offer dedicated consulting services to help clients unlock AI abilities in their businesses more broadly. With this service, we're aiming to both solve existing problems and lean into opportunities created by AI capabilities.

The AI team has also created several proofs of concept for AI applications, including:

  • AI-enhanced search
  • lay abstract generation
  • summarization
  • document-specific chat
  • quiz generation
  • language translation
  • text-to-speech functionality
  • related content recommendations
These prototypes show what is possible with generative AI tools. While the sheer number of possibilities is potentially overwhelming, these tools could greatly benefit researchers and casual readers alike.

As we continue to learn, we are committed to sharing our internal efforts with our community and the wider industry, to support the harnessing of these tools in service of our mission, so stay tuned for more.
