ARVO + Silverchair

ARVO Journals

The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) is the largest and most respected eye and vision research organization in the world, with nearly 12,000 members from over 75 countries. ARVO advances research worldwide into understanding the visual system and preventing, treating and curing its disorders.

ARVO migrated their three journals (Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual ScienceJournal of Vision, and Translational Vision Science & Technology) to the Silverchair Platform in 2015. At that time, IOVS was subscription-based for the most recent six months content. With Silverchair’s support, by 2016 all ARVO journals were operating on a gold Open Access business model by decision of their Board of Trustees.

ARVO chose Silverchair for our ability to provide an upgrade in branding, usability, and unification of their journals. The visual interface aspect of “vision” journals is very important, so the modern look and features—on desktop as well as mobile—was an important part of ARVO’s migration.

Silverchair and ARVO have worked together over the last two years to shift our product development focus from the transition process to driving traffic, cross promotion of content across ARVO journals, boosting impact factor, and encouraging submissions—the lifeblood of a full OA program.

Helped by this joint focus, from 2016 to 2017 overall ARVO journal user sessions and page views both increased 15%, article views increased 20% and referrals from major search engines increased 29%.

In 2017, Translational Vision Science and Technology (ARVO’s newest journal) earned its first Impact Factor rating, of 2.221, placing it favorably among established journals in the ophthalmological field.

“ARVO journals staff look forward to continuing our work with Silverchair, to upgrade the functionality of our journal websites and to ensure that the open access content of our three journals is as discoverable and accessible to our readers as possible.”
