Participating publishers will make their content available to AI research assistants through a single connector, with each keeping its own brand, access rules, and independence while expanding their reach.

(Charlottesville, VA) October 5, 2026 – Silverchair today announced the launch of a six-month pilot of Research Bridge, a shared Model Context Protocol (MCP) channel that gives independent scholarly publishers a distribution channel into the AI research assistants where researchers increasingly discover, read, and synthesize the literature. Built as shared infrastructure operated by Silverchair on behalf of its publisher clients, Research Bridge empowers publishers to take part in AI-driven research workflows on their own terms, maintaining complete control of their content, customer relationships, and business models.

The pilot brings together a group of publishers from across disciplines, including Royal Society Publishing, the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Diabetes Association, the Royal Society of Chemistry, Rockefeller University Press, Portland Press, and the Association for Materials Protection and Performance, with additional publishers joining in the coming weeks.

This new offering responds to shifting discovery and consumption patterns, as more of researchers' experience of scholarly content takes place in AI tools. When new distribution channels emerge, publishers have often faced a choice between building their own technical infrastructure or accepting integration and commercial terms set by others. Research Bridge gives publishers an opportunity to participate in emerging AI distribution channels while leveraging their existing platform infrastructure, such as subscriber entitlements, and end-user relationships without relinquishing control. The channel delivers access to entitled content from all participating publishers through a single connector, offering the benefits of scale to a diverse cohort of trusted independent publishers.

"Scholarly publishers have always done their best work when they make their own decisions about their content and their communities, then come together around shared infrastructure that serves everyone," said Will Schweitzer, Silverchair CEO. "Researchers increasingly meet published work inside AI assistants, and connecting with them in the tools they already use is where much of the value now sits. We built Research Bridge so publishers can reach the agentic channel on their own terms, with the technology, data, and support to experiment, build new products, and maintain their connection with their audiences. We're developing this to be sustainable over the long term. Research Bridge maintains provenance, keeps each publisher's brand front and center, delivers full context rather than isolated chunks, relays content safely, and directs readers back to the version of record. Every publisher who participates makes the channel more valuable for the others. No publisher should have to give up control to participate in the future of scholarly communication."

The shared channel model reflects how visibility increasingly works inside AI tools, offering a breadth of coverage that is compelling both to AI platforms as well as the researchers themselves. While individual publisher channels offer depth for specialists seeking engagement with a specific corpus, the shared channel delivers wider reach and visibility. Research Bridge lowers the individual effort and cost of taking part while raising the collective value of the channel, following the same logic that has made open standards successful throughout scholarly communication: common rails, with each publisher remaining an independent destination.

Silverchair prepares participating publishers’ content and makes it available through a single MCP endpoint that any AI platform can connect to. Access controls, licensing rules, and attribution are enforced at the point of retrieval, so that content flows only to the institutions and individuals who are already entitled to it.

Over the six-month pilot, Silverchair and participating publishers will evaluate how researchers use the channel and how AI platforms engage with the combined corpus so that each publisher can be better informed to determine which commercial models best serve the community, with plans to open additional options to publishers once the pilot concludes.

The Research Bridge pilot is currently available to Silverchair Platform clients. Publishers interested in learning more or joining the pilot can contact their account manager or visit silverchair.com/ai-lab/research-bridge.
