A search on “sclc,” for example, returns results for “small cell long cancer” instead of just artilces that use the "sclc" acronym. This functionality vastly improves the way users find information by providing results based on a semantic relevancy ranking of normalized concepts and not just word matching.

Silverchair's semantic search provides better results by normalizing synonyms, alternate spellings, acronyms, and jargon and by connecting closely related concepts. For example, when searching "CKD" (a common abbreviation for Chronic Kidney Disease) via the traditional "full text" search engine employed on the old Annals site, 53 results are returned. Using our semantic search, we were able to retrieve 139 highly relevant results as many pertain directly to Chronic Kidney Disease but do not use the acronym "CKD."

Content Relationships

The powerful tagging and taxonomy behind Silverchair's SCM6 results in the surfacing of closely related articles and other resources. We employ semantic fingerprinting to identify content relationships and present them in a easy-to-navigate interface.

Integrated CME

A new CME section has been developed to make CME easier to navigate, both by subject and by date. A quick-reference dashboard provides a personalized view of CME available, in progress, and completed. Additionally, CME has been integrated with journal articles, allowing readers to take a CME quiz directly on the article that quiz pertains to.

Multimedia

This new section provides quick access to Annals growing archive of multimedia. We have additionally upgraded the site's video capablities to enable streaming video for immediate viewing.

Supplemental Content

Silverchair's SCM6 brings all supplemental and related content together on the article page. Users can tab to each section and quickly to find related supplements , videos, comments, CME, data, and summaries for patients.

Redesigned Article Page

New article page design simplifies a complex environment. All materials relevant to a given article are featured in a quick-reference tabbed interface. Users can easily view the article, figures, tables, references, supplemental data, or related multimedia. Associated CME can be accessed directly from the article page. Curated links present related editorials, letters, and other resources. And the SCM6 semantic engine provides
links to an array of highly related resources from across the
JAMA Network and beyond. Additionally, article tools have
been carefully selected to minimize clutter and provide
users with simple but extremely useful functionality.

CME

CME is available directly on associated articles allowing users to simply click “start quiz” as they read the article. A new CME section pulls together all the CME activities from across the JAMA Network and makes it easy to browse by subject, by date, or by publication. A CME dashboard shows users a personalized display of all available, in progress, and completed CME activities. CME is also indicated in Tables of
Contents, Topic Collections, and Search Results.

Semantic Collections

Users from all fields of medicine will find semantically generated topic collections that combine related content from across the JAMA Network. Medical specialists can quickly find all content related to their specialty. On February 27, 2013 the all-new ASME Digital Collection, formerly the ASME Digital Library, relaunched on Silverchair’s natively semantic platform, SCM6. Together, Silverchair and ASME created the most robust taxonomy and tagging system available for mechanical engineering. Users can easily view the article, figures, tables, references, supplemental data, or discussions on the article. Sophisticated handling of tables and figures allow users to isolate them or see them in detail within the context of the article itself. The jump link navigation on the upper right of each article section allows users to quickly move from section to section with graphical as well as textual cues. Additionally, article tools have been carefully selected to minimize clutter and provide users with simple but extremely useful functionality. Further, semantic fingerprinting identifies content relationships and presents them in easy-to-navigate widgets that update continuously as new content is published. Hence, each article, proceeding, and ebook chapter page of the ASME Digital Collection serves as a reliable “launch pad” to highly relevant related information across all content.
